Swim School

It is a priority of Swim School to make swimming lessons available to everyone! From birth to 100, it is never too late to learn the vital skills. Come and join us in our lovely warm pool. Our lessons provide an ideal opportunity for parents to help their young children to experience early water activities, helping to build the foundations for swimming Suitable from birth.

Lessons For All

Children's Lessons

Our youngest classes are aimed at Parent and toddler foundation classes which then moves up to junior coaching which follows levels 1-12 of the Swim England (Formerly ASA) guidelines to guarantee consistency and development.

SENTINEL SWIM SCHOOL DUCKLING AWARDS

Duckling 1

By the end of this stage your child will be able to:

Make a supervised safe entry with adult support if required, float on back with adult support behind the head without aids, blow bubbles at the water surface, wet the head without submersion, kick five metres on back with adult support, travel without assistance two metres to a floating object,enter the pool, rotate and return to the side with adult support and exit the water safely with minimal adult support.

Duckling 2

By the end of this stage your child will be able to:

Make a sitting entry with adult support if required, using a buoyancy aid, rotate through 180 degrees without assistance, submerge the face with confidence under adult supervision and without force, blow an object for a distance of two metres, travel three metres using arms and/or legs without assistance, move five metres along the rail or wall without assistance, enter the pool, rotate and return to the side with minimal adult support and exit the water safely with minimal adult support.

Duckling 3

By the end of this stage your child will be able to:

Make a supervised jump to an adult with or without support, float on front or back without adult support, show a streamlined shape on front or back when push off from a supporting adult, blow bubbles with the mouth and nose underwater, travel five metres on front to the side of the pool without assistance, kick five metres on the front holding a float (the adult may hold the other end of the float), enter the pool, rotate and return to the side without adult support and climb out of the water with assistance if required.

Duckling 4

By the end of this stage your child will be able to:

Jump in unaided but supervised into the water, show a mushroom or star float, rotate 360 degrees either horizontally or vertically, push and glide achieving a streamlined position on the front or back, submerge completely, travel without assistance 10 metres on the front or back, show the sequence to jump in the water, turn around, swim back to the point of entry and hold on to the side or rail and climb out of the water with assistance if required.

SENTINEL SWIM SCHOOL STAGES 1-5

1. This stage helps develop safety awareness, the ‘class’ scenario, basic movement skills and water confidence skills. Swimmers may use aids, such as armbands and floats.

2. This stage focuses on safe entry to the water, including jumping in, basic floating, travel on the front and back up to a distance of 5m, and rotating the body to regain an upright position. Swimmers may use armbands and floats.

3. More on developing safe entries into the water – including submersion – travelling up to 10m on the front and back, and progressing water safety knowledge and body rotation skills from the previous stage.

4. This stage aids the learner in developing the understanding of buoyancy through a range of skills. Also covered is refining kicking techniques for all strokes. The swimmer has to swim 10m to a standard directed by the ASA.

5.During this stage swimmers develop ‘watermanship’ through sculling and treading water skills and body complete rotation. They perform all strokes for 10m to a standard provided by the ASA in the Learn to Swim Framework.

SENTINEL SWIM ACADEMY STAGES 6+

6. Developing effective swimming skills – including coordinated breathing – across all strokes is the focus of this stage. Learners also have to swim a distance of 25m using a stroke of their choice. Children learn about aspects of water safety

7. Children develop quality stroke techniques up to 100m incorporating the skills they have learned, and combine them to develop a linked routine. They also complete an obstacle course combining skills accomplished through stages 1-7.

Once your child has completed all the stages we have good exit routes into a number of different swimming aveneus such as Pre Competition, Rookies Lifesaving and our Local Swimming Clubs across all sites.

Adult Swimming Lessons (16+)

Starting from scratch or brushing up on your technique, we can help! We will work closely with you in the water to understand your specific goals and adapt our lessons to suit your needs! With our support and encouragement we will help you overcome any fears of the water and help make family swimming fun and enjoyable.

1-2-1 Lessons

1 to 1 lessons are extremely popular for those wanting just a little more practise on certain strokes or skills and are available during the day, evening or weekend. The lesson is moulded around the needs of the individual and are suitable for all ages and abilities.
